Our Next Visiting Speaker February 26 - Dr. Nicholaos Jones
Dr. Nicholaos Jones, Associate Professor of Philosophy at the University of Alabama, Huntsville, will be giving a talk in our department on February 26. His talk, titled “Strategies of Explanatory Abstraction in Molecular Systems Biology,” will occur from 1:30-3:30 in McCain Hall, Room 175. His abstract is as follows:
"I consider three explanatory strategies from recent systems biology that are driven by mathematics as much as mechanistic detail. Analysis of differential equations drives the first strategy; topological analysis of network motifs drives the second; mathematical theorems from control engineering drive the third. I also distinguish three abstraction types: aggregates, being elements grouped into single composites; generalizations, being classes formed from instances; and structures, akin to positions held by occupants. Using the robust perfect adaptation of chemotaxis in Escherichia coli as a reference point, I argue that each strategy invokes a different combination of abstraction types."
We hope to see you there!
