Our Next Visiting Speaker February 6
Dr. Andrew Cling, Professor of Philosophy at the University of Alabama, Huntsville,, will our next visiting speaker. He will be presenting a talk titled “Epistemic Regress Problems and Impossible Ideals” on Friday, February 6 from 1:30-3:30 in McCain Hall, Room 185. Dr. Cling's abstract is as follows:
"For a large class of reasons, the following principles are independently plausible: (1) we can have good reasons for X, (2) good reasons must be supported by good reasons, and (3) good reasons cannot depend upon endless sequences of reasons, whether circles or infinite regresses of reasons. The problem is that these principles cannot all be true. The epistemic regress problem and the problem of the criterion are special cases of this general "paradox of reasons." These problems show that we cannot have many of the kinds of reasons for belief we do and ought to value. What to do? I claim that the principles that pose these problems express impossible ideals but that it can be salutary to accept such ideals."
We hope to see you there!
